Why has Connecting Up created this directory?
The need for a national directory of Australian nonprofits and charities was a key issue identified by the recent Productivity Commission enquiry into the Contribution of the Not-for-Profit Sector. Australia is the only developed country that doesn't have such a directory. The Connecting Up Directory represents a major development for nonprofits and charities as it provides a single point of reference for anyone seeking information about nonprofits and charities. The directory assists those who are seeking services, volunteering opportunities, networking with other organisations, philanthropic causes and more. It also enables greater interaction between the nonprofit sector, government and business.
How was the directory developed?
Connecting Up has developed the directory by acquiring and collecting information about nonprofits and charities from a variety of sources. We have used our own funds to do this and have also been assisted by a grant from Google Inc.
What can the directory do for my nonprofit organisation?
Listing your organisation in the Connecting Up Directory will give you an online presence in one of the most visited nonprofit sites in Australia. You will be better able to connect with other nonprofits, promote your organisation to donors, funders, media, and other stakeholders. It is important that nonprofits and charities are identified and quantified as this allows the significant contribution made by these organisations to be better understood, measured and supported.
Nonprofits are so busy! Why should we take the time to join the Connecting Up Directory?
Nonprofits and charities already have a variety of options for an internet presence. However, the Connecting Up Directory is part of a wider set of programs that aim to assist and support nonprofits in their operations so that they can become more effective in the work that they do. Connecting Up is working closely with government departments and agencies as well as key peak bodies that want to strengthen the sector. A single point of reference for comprehensive and reliable information about nonprofits and charities is essential if we are to be able work together to improve operations, accountability and transparency. This will build greater confidence in nonprofits and lead to a stronger and more sustainable sector.
What kind of organisations are eligible to be listed in the directory?
Non-profit organisations that are operating in Australia are eligible to be listed. This includes, but is not limited to, the following types of organisations:

- Company limited by guarantee

Who can edit the directory listings?
A directory listing can be edited only by someone whose account is linked to the listing. This will be a person who has a legitimate link with the organisation and is authorised to edit it. Users of the directory can leave comments and corrections to alert Connecting Up staff that details need to be changed or updated.
What does 'claim a listing' mean?
Claiming a listing means identifying an organisation listing as yours so that you can update it or correct it as necessary on the directory website. When you claim an organisation, you take responsibility for maintaining it. No-one else can claim it unless you reliquish it.
What does 'relinquish a listing' mean?
Relinquishing a listing means that you are no longer going to maintain it and are releasing it so that it is available to be claimed by somebody else. This is appropriate if you cease to be involved with, or employed by, an organisation that you have previously claimed, or want to pass this reponsibility on to another person who is authorised to maintain it.
Will I receive a reminder to update my listing?
We will prompt organisations to check their listing if it has not been updated for over 12 months.
Can I send a mass email to organisations in the directory?
No, but you can contact organisations individually using the contact details provided.
Will my personal or organisation details be passed on or sold on to other users?
No – the information we hold in the directory is protected from inappropriate use – please see our Privacy statement and Terms & conditions.
