Shared web hosting versus VPS
Hi there We are a not-for-profit in Adelaide and have recently hit some thresholds where we have to re-consider the longer term hosting of our website. Currently we are are set up in a shared business web hosting environment, but it has been recommended we move to a virtual private server (VPS). What is unclear is the type of maintenance that would be required, what operating system we would need, what hosting companies are the most reputable and value for money etc etc. We will most likely require professional advice to get this right, specially as we have to consider some other projects coming online soon (eg: a second static website). Any suggestions about who could look at our current and near-future needs and come up with the most appropriate recommendations? We have data on current web traffic and web storage etc.

You have not enough information to give an informed answer to your question. I'd be asking the people that have recommended you to upgrade for their full proposal. What issues do you currently have. What gaps are being covered by upgrading to a VPS. What are your future requirement. This shouldn't be an exercise in and of itself but driven by a business case.
