Which server is most suitable for my organisation?
Currently I have three computers in my home (all wireless) and 6 printers, some wireless, one connected to modem and 4 different machines that need connections direct to the relevant printer. Which server would enable me to locate all my printers in a common place and utilise whichever printer appropriate from each machine? Appreciate your advice. The answer is a Windows 2008 R2 server, but you need to ask yourself if you need that kind of complication at home, when a Windows 7 or Windows XP machine with printers configured can adequately share its printers with other workstations.Reply by ryan jonescan on Tuesday, 25 October, 2011 - 14:58
Great suggestion. Is there any reason why you haven't suggested one of the Small Business Server range? Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials was designed for just this situation, and designed to be easier to use for a home or home office environment.Reply by n/a from Rococo IT on Wednesday, 26 October, 2011 - 00:59
Hey Ryan, My rationale is KISS. While SBS 2011 is perfectly suited to this environment, without someone that knows even a little to implement it, then it's overkill :-)Reply by Grant Laing from Blended IT Solutions on Wednesday, 26 October, 2011 - 02:59
Hi, Depending on the complexity you require, you may be just as well to get a print server device with some nas capacity. this way it keeps it very simple, and doesn't require any extra management from your part. Yes, a win 2008 r2 server would do the same job but will require a bit more investment and management on your part. I select this if you are going to store all the files and want a central place do the backups from. If you want to discuss this further please send us email. thanks GrantReply by thethe on Friday, 28 October, 2011 - 10:40
