Great question! Our agency (www.cdaa.com.au ) has a lot of experience in this area. For most Not-For-profit and member based organisations the ability to fundraise effectively through their web site is becoming a core business activity. This means using a web site CMS that can facilitate these requirements is an important first step. Essentially what you are looking for is a Web site CMS that has powerful inbuilt marketing, community engagement and ecommerce feature sets. Many existing solutions provide various levels of functionality that can cater to these requirements to one extent or another. From our experience however, only a handful do this extremely well, and without requiring a significant number of third part elements or customisation of the core system architecture. While there is nothing wrong with adding third party modules, or custom building new functional elements into your CMS, doing so comes at additional cost and time, both upfront in development, and post launch in maintenance. For many financially sensitive organisations, obtaining funding for the initial design and build of the website rarely covers the cost sufficiently of the ongoing, maintenance and upkeep of the Web site CMS software. Quite simply, the more customised the system used, the more maintenance and upkeep will be required. From our experience there are two outstanding Web site options which fit Not-For-profit and member based organisations well. SiteCore CMS and the DotNetNuke Enterprise CMS. Both offer terrific inbuilt feature sets and are incredibility robust, saleable and based on the proven Microsoft .NET framework. DotNetNuke Enterprise CMS particularly offers incredible value for money and comes with no licence fees, only an annual subscription which provides you with access to software updates and support. Some features include an online store with integrated PayPal features, integrated analytics for visitor tracking, advanced workflow and versioning features which enabling content history to be stored and rolled back to a previous version. For a more expensive, yet extremely powerful CMS solution alternative, it’s going to be difficult to go past the SiteCore CMS if marketing, user engagement and converting online browsers into buyers is critical to your organisation. This system has the ability to learn from visitor behaviour in real time (while they are on your website) and adjust the content on the fly so that web site visitors see content relative to their interest. Using the SiteCore CMS we are able to create an online experience which is unique for every visitor, thus increasing engagement and conversion success. I hope that helps. Please contact us 08 8365 6577 if you require further assistance, advice or wish to get an idea on costs.Reply by energetica on Monday, 28 March, 2011 - 19:57
Before you decide on a fundraising system think about your organisation. Ask your team questions such as how could the great work you are doing now be improved with a fundraising system? What types of process would reduce the administration burden of your team? Look at your ideal scenario and see how the technologies available can be adapted to meet your needs, rather than locking yourself into a one size fits most system that may become uncomfortable. Then consider the technology questions. Do you have a membership management system? If so/if not is there a fundraising system that incorporates one that will fit you or is capable of expanding if your needs change. Think about your current site, can a sytem be incorporated into your site easily so you only have one administration interface, or what if you decide to upgrade or expand your site can you take your data with you easily? What if you decide to change developers - are there other developers that can take over your system or will you need to start from scratch? And what if you want something developed that is outside of the box, in this highly evolving online world chances are the strategies you use today will differ from what is hot tomorrow - which systems will keep up? And then, think staff capacity. How will you manage training or staff turn over? Are there additional resources available online so you can take on more responsibility for the configuration or development of the system if your organisation expands? These are by no means easy questions to answer, but it is an important investment for your organisation. Rather than making the task seem even more daunting I hope I have opened the floodgates for the conversations within your organisation! It's not just about your budget, it's about your organisation, your team and the people who rely on you to do great work! On a personal note, we use and recommend CiviCRM, it is open source so there are no software licence fees, it can be customised to suit your organisation and as you change, evolve and grow it will too. When you are ready, consider Energetica, we work exculsively with non profit organisations using the best available open source software, we will happily share our knowledge and IT know-how to help you develop a great system. www.energetica.com.auReply by from Redhart Consulting on Thursday, 28 April, 2011 - 20:31
I believe that everyone has provided some good information to get you started :) Energetica is correct, know what you actually need before you start. Software development projects have a habit getting away from you. Produce a software requirements specification or engage a suitable organisation to help (we can also help if needed) Like the others we also provide a comprehensive system called "Rocket" that includes CRM, fund raising, events and much more all with out of the box web integration into most CMS. I would be very happy to discuss what we can offer. We are currently deploying this solution for Whitelion and many other organisations and extremely happy to walk you through the whole process. Good Luck. Mark Jones 0386781750
