Hi, I am finalising costings of a new server infrastructure for the Keppel Bay Sailing Club and I have just read the Windows Server Datacenter edition product details on connecting up. I am wondering if there is just a simple typo or if there is a specific licence difference for Not-For-Profit Licencing. The section of the description I refer to is as follows: This donation provides one Microsoft Windows Server Datacenter Edition server license. Each license allows up to two physical processors on one server and > As per normal Microsoft Licencing rules Microsoft states: Differentiation only by virtualization rights – two virtual instances for Standard edition and unlimited virtual instances for Datacenter edition. (Reference: http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/6/4/e64f72bf-55e9-4d85-9efe-39605d7ce272/windowsserver2012r2_licensing_guide.pdf) Can I please get clarification before finalizing the quoting stage for the club. Kind regards Ben Noy

Hi Ben, As far as i know there is no difference in non-profit and normal license. If you are using data center it is based on physical processors in the box, not the amount of cores, which is why you can run multiple vm's on it. This only applies to hyper-v though if you are using vmware based vm's or some other virtualization technology, this is licensed separately.Reply by Martin Odenthal from Working Technology Pty Ltd on Thursday, 28 January, 2016 - 15:18
Hi Ben, As mentioned there is no difference in the Datacentre edition product purchased from Microsoft distributors (retail) compared to Connecting UP. The only thing is that Not For Profits can get it at a heavily discounted price through Connecting UP.Reply by Colin Thompson from TechBrain on Thursday, 28 January, 2016 - 20:18
Hi Ben, You are definitely eligible to run as many VM as you want on datacentre. The hardware limitation is 2 physical processors. We have deployed for a client with 2 x CPU and 5 x VM.
