IT Server Relocation
Hello All, I need to understand what exactly is required in a Server Relocation. I understand that you need to have the telephone lines and internet set up at the other end. My concerns are the software side of things. De-racking and re-racking does not seem that difficult But once at the new location what needs to be set up? Very Lost If anyone can assist it would be greatly appreciated. Sh0n

Hi, Actually moving the servers is the easy part of the process. My advice would be to change as little as possible from your current internal setup, to the new location, this way everything should work at the other end the same as it does now. Yes, you will need to move, relocate, or get new lines at the new location and setup or relocate your internet connection as well. most isp providers can help with this, and then you can also make sure you can get the same or better internet connection at the new location. But the most important thing to remember is to backup your server before you move it. this way if it gets dropped or something you will not lose all your data. I can give more details if you like on the steps required for this if you want to email me at grant@blendedit.com.au hope this little bit helps GrantReply by Stuart Witt from Interintra Adelaide on Monday, 12 August, 2013 - 15:49
Hi Sh0n, I guess that would really depend on your current setup, as all servers and their associated infrastructure are not typically the same. Without knowing any more info about your specific environment, there are some requirements that would apply to most situations. - Make sure that you have a current and working backup of all of your critical data and associated systems. This is always required prior to making any changes to your system that could have an adverse impact (or in your case moving the system to another location). - With regard to the internet connection, depending on what type you have currently, its always better to get the new connection ordered at the new site and activated ahead of time, so that come moving day, your'e ready to go in that regard. Internet services almost always take a few days to go through and in some cases if there are service issues in your area, can take longer. I find it better to run two connections side by side (as appose to a transfer) and then cancel the old one once you are settled. - Data points/power: do a check at the new site to make sure that there are sufficient data points and power points in place to accept your IT system in its current form. - Mail: do you host your own mail and or connect back to your existing IT system remotely? if the answer is yes, then it is likely that you will need to have changes made to your MX records at the time that you move. The exception is if you keep the same Static IP address at your new site, however (not likely without some downtime generally). - Assuming that all of the above has been covered off, the actual move process should be fairly straight forward (with the right planning). If it's omething that you haven't done before, my advice would be to contact a good IT provider to at least look over things pre-move and assess for any potential hiccups. I hope that has been helpful, happy to assist further if you require. Good luck with the move :) BrettReply by Sales from Datcom Cloud PTY LTD on Monday, 12 August, 2013 - 15:58
In a server relocation, the theory is that the move is quite simple, however planning around the What If’s and having a contingency plan in case of incident plays the majority of the role. Considerations for backup strategy, existing networking (if there are any special VLAN’s in place or configuration rules within switches or routers) and implications of change (if any). Internet access at the new site should be ready and tested prior to moving, along with testing of the data points in the office (if applicable). A mock move should be completed prior to physical move. Applications should not be affected by a physical move as long as the internal network structure is not changed. The best idea would be to contact our Managed Services team to complete a quick audit and provide advice on the move. Please feel free to contact me on the number below.
