Symantec Backup Exec 12.5
We are currently running symantec backup exec 12.5 We do restore from the onsite backup but never from an offsite backup. Does anyone have any idea how to do this? If someone has documentation or anything it would be of great help

How is your data sent offsite? An offsite backup is usually a backup to a tape that is then sent offsite for storage. So an offsite recovery is done by first recalling the tape from storage, loading it in the library, and then performing an onsite backup as normal.Reply by Colin Thompson from TechBrain on Thursday, 6 June, 2013 - 12:19
Hi There Paul, It depends what you are doing for the offsite backups. Are you backing up to a remote tape drive, or using the System Recovery component, backup to disk, or even replication via a NAS for example. However, if you are using Backup Exec for the job then, assuming the backup was recent, the catalogue should still have the information in it and you can just start a restore job like any other. Be careful to make sure you do not automatically overwrite data if it already exists.....you are far better off to restore to a new location. If my assumption about the method of backup is wrong, just update your question with as much information about the backup as possible including location of the components, what method of backup, how much data etc. Regards Colin Thompson Blue Networks & Technology http://www.bluenetworks.com.au community @bluenetworks.com.auReply by from IT Leaders on Thursday, 6 June, 2013 - 12:55
Testing backups is very wise. As the other responders have said, the method for offsite restore depends on where and what medium it's on. Backup and disaster recovery systems have changed a lot in the last few years and lots of NFPs are not aware they have higher levels of risk than they could have with a more modern system. Secondly, it also might be easier and lower risk to consider a services agreement that includes monthly backup testing. Finally, IT Leaders has a unique flexibility with our backup & DR cloud-based solutions, with options for replication to a secondary site or data centre of your choice, retention periods as long as you wish, point-in-time archiving to tape or other media, and more. Whether your core IT systems are cloud-based or on-premises, we can give you the feeling of control and safety with your data and applications. We have not found a NFP whose compliance and risk needs could not be met by our backup systems and support services. Please feel free to give me a call directly on mobile if I can assist with any ideas, or you just want a quick answer on the original remote restore question. Hi Paul, BackupExec has Instructions on how to perform Restores by going to Help / Administrator Guide. When running a Restore, BackupExec will prompt you for the Media required. This is where knowledge of your Backup configuration would assist, because Offsite Backup could be many things as the other responses already indicate. There is a good reason why companies delegate back ups including monitoring, restore testing etc to business technology companies, they are time consuming and critical. Obviously we are happy to assist you need a hand. Have a great week. ciao, Karina P: 0296857300 E: karina@skeda.com.au
