Remote Access
We are working towards having remote access from my home office to work Small Business Server 2011 - on Windows 7 professional. We believe all is set up and in order but current router not permitting access via port forwarding, so we thought a new router would allow. I will be accessing from NBN satellite to ADSL1. Thought Cisco 520W Router may be good option. Your advice would be appreciated.

You just need to make sure: - you have a static IP - You setup correct DNS entries and matching SSL cert (typically remote.yourdomain.com.au) - You setup the required TCP port forwards: 80 / 443 / 4125 Any questions let me know, Regards, Chris Herrmann Far EdgeReply by n/a from Rococo IT on Thursday, 7 June, 2012 - 14:19
Port 4125 does not need to be open, infact the only port that does is 443. Having said that, I'd prefer you put in a firewall and had your users VPN into your work network before they were able to access the server. A reclaimed PC (Pentium 4 and above) and install an open source firewall in pfSense (http://pfSense.org) or Endian (http://endian.com) and then install the openvpn software on the users machine.
