Hi, You need to buy license only for the Servers that you have i.e. 1 License for 1 Server OR 2 licenses for 2 servers as explained below: If you mean Windows Server 2016 Datacentre Edition then: You need to license all the cores on the server with a minimum of 8 Cores Per CPU and 16 Cores Per Server. Advantage of Windows Server Datacenter lies in the fact that you do NOT require CALs and it enables you configure unlimited Virtual Machines (VM). If you meant Windows Server based datacentre then: 1. You can go either with Windows Server 2016 Standard Edition or Datacentre Edition (explained above). 2. Windows Server 2016 Standard Edition is offered on a Server CAL model. 3. You need to license all the cores on the server with a minimum of 8 Cores Per CPU and 16 Cores Per Server 4. In addition, you need to have either Device or User CAL as explained below: i. You use device CAL when users access the server from known devices ii. You use User CAL when a user needs to access server from multiple devices. The user is 'named' user. This means you need to license all the users. There is no concept of 'concurrent users. Based on 4 i and 4 ii, you can determine whether to use User or Device CALs. As the number of users is few, your server edition will depend upon the number of VMs needed. Windows Server provides 2 VMs. for more VMs, you buy multiple licenses. I hope this explains. Please do not hesitate to contact me for further information and assistance. CORRECTION Nathan (Nathan.Morel@ITDepartment.com.au) from ITDepartment.com.au pointed out and I may correct that you do require CALs even with Windows Server Datacentre Edition. So please ignore this part, rest all is good. Regards Steve Bungay
