Antivirus (is Symantec Endpoint right?
Hi there, We're looking for antivirus for about 3 machines in the office, and 7 machines outside (never connected to the office). We already have another 12 PCs in the office with another year of "Trend Micro Worry Free Business Security Standard 6.0", which we'll move across in 12 months to whatever we get now. I'm looking at buying multiple "Symantec Protection Suite Small Business Edition (Protection for 1 Endpoint)" My questions are 1) Is this the appropriate protection (there are several options) - this looks similar to our TrendMicro currently. 2) Do I just buy 10 of these "1 endpoint" products, or do I need a server somewhere too? (Normally it'd be a single purchase of 10 licenses). 3) Will these function okay for our remote offices, or should I really get something separate? http://www.donortec.org/symantec-enterprise/symantec-protection-suite-small-business-edition Thanks, appreciate your help. Greg

Thanks IT4Business, but $360 vs $50 really points towards using Symantec Endpoint. I presume the advantage would be I could log in to the TrendMicro servers to check up on my remote office status. I'm not sure if Symantec will give me any other status info, or if you provide more than that advantage. <br><br> I notice there are no other answers to my question. Do you know if it is simply a $50 charge for the 10? Or am I missing an important component?

Greg, The advantage with the Trend is that it doesnt need a server for the updates or management. Its a full cloud based service. With the Symantec you would need to install the management console on your server, then install all the client software. With your remote office, you would need to open ports on your firewalls to allow them to talk back to the server or have a VPN setup between the two sites. So symantec won't function remotely without access to the server? <br><br> My current trend micro product runs like a standard antivirus program when disconnected. It updates virus definitions but doesn't report back to the server.

I dont think so no. the last time i used it, it needs to be client/server setup. All the Trend WFBS Advanced install we do, we do an IPXFER and point them to the WAN IP of the server, open the ports on the firewall, then they have true roaming updates. And while your Trend would be updating definitions, it isnt reporting or updating settings OR program versions. So while you think you are protected, if you are using an old install, there might be flaws in your system that could allow problems / attacks.Reply by Colin Thompson from TechBrain on Monday, 4 July, 2011 - 02:04
Just a quick point here Greg. You can install and run your Symantec clients remotely without the need for a management server. You can install them as unmanaged client and they WILL update both definitions and program files direct from Symantec. No need for the management server unless you want to centrally control and manage your machines. Ideal but not essential.Reply by lifelinenb on Tuesday, 12 July, 2011 - 15:47
