Hello what is required for a relocation of all IT equipment?

Paul, for computers the answer is not much, mostly carefully noting what is plugged in where. For the sake of scope limitation I'm assuming you're talking about an office with a handful of computers/laptops and perhaps a server and a couple of printers. I've performed a number of office relocations in Sydney varying in size from 10 computers to 450+ computers. The issues are almost always categorised into two lists. The first is unlabeled stuff that can't be identified/put back together properly, and the second is older hardware that hasn't been turned off in a while that just gives up the ghost and refuses to work after the move. 95% of the issues are the first issue. With regards to phone systems, it depends what system you have as to how easy or hard it is to move. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions. 02 8004 5167

Hi Paul, There are quite a few things to consider depending on if you are relocating to a new site or just moving your server room. Some things to think about are: Your internet connection at the new site and if you are in contract with your existing ISP. Phone System and moving the phone lines and numbers. If you have email servers on site DNS records will need changing. Any Web sites hosted on your servers will also need redirecting. New Site fit out including planning for cabling, power and workstation/printer locations. All of the above takes time (telcos can take 4-6 weeks to move lines) Also planning to minimize downtime and interruption to workers. Paul, A relocation needs to be project managed to ensure all services such as communications, broadband and the new site has been prepared well in advance. The physical relocation of servers and equipment would need to be prepared for the move by carefully documenting the whole environment pre and after the relocation. Hi Paul, All the responses so far cover some amount of information about things to do, watch out for (like provisioning times for telco's is an important one). For an IT Relocation Checklist a good reference is : http://www.becusacorp.com/IT%20Relocation%20Checklist.pdf The company is not in Australia, however the points are valid. As I don't know where you are moving from and to, how complex your current environment is, how many internal resources you have to assist and when you need to move etc; if you use the checklist referenced above as a guide it will help. If you have a simple environment then spending money on expensive project managers (PM) is not always a good spend. If your environment is large and complex, a PM could be a good investment.
