Windows 8 Installation Issues
I am having problems activating any Microsoft Windows 8 on the computers that I put it on, is there a problem with the system. The error that comes up is the following message: Error code: 0x8007007B Error description: The file name, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect. I’ve even gone to the extent of reinstalling Windows 7 and wiping out the whole computer drive and starting again yet to no positive outcome. Do you have any idea what I should do to make it activate? Regards Bernadette Norton Chief Executive Officer Australian Guild of Music Education Ph: 03 9822 3111 Email: bnorton7@bigpond.net.au

Hi Bernadette, Here is a response from one of our technicians that may help There may be an issue with the product key that comes built into win8. There’s probably a key that Bernadette needs to enter, but sometimes win 8 install doesn’t prompt for a key. To change the key: http://www.mobilemancer.com/2012/09/10/error-code-0x8007007b/ I would check first that she has or hasn’t entered a key yet before going down this path thoughReply by Colin Thompson from TechBrain on Friday, 14 December, 2012 - 15:55
Hi Bernadette, Ultimately what this error is telling you is that the key does not match the media used to install. If they match, then the above URL will work. However, if you installed from volume licensing media, for example, the system is probably looking for a Key Management Server (And failing). Here is the Microsoft support note. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929826) I would try the above suggestion and if that does not work, make sure they media and the key come from the same place.
