Purchasing extra CALs for SBS 2003
Our SBS 2003 server currently shows Installed Licences 5 (Maximum Usage 7)so looks like we need to buy a few extra CALs. Just a few questions if I may :) 1. When I buy CALs for SBS 2003 do I need to specify if I want Device or User ? 2. Is there a way of finding if the currently installed 5 Licences on the server are Device or User ? 3. Is it possible to mix Device and User CALs on SBS 2003? I rang MS on 1800 002 691 with these questions, the person on the help desk was very polite but unfortunately not much help with these questions. thanks !

Hi, I have put the answers to your questions below; 1. When I buy CALs for SBS 2003 do I need to specify if I want Device or User ? - Yes, you will have to specify if you want user or device cals, I usually always advise on using user cals, as these are the most flexible. 2. Is there a way of finding if the currently installed 5 Licences on the server are Device or User ? - Yes, if you have administrator access to your server, you can logon and goto licencing under the administrative tools in either the start menu or control panel. It will show it there. the other way is to check the documentation that came with the server, if was purchased as a retail or open licence product then you should have some paperwork for this. or there maybe a oem licence sticker on the outside of the server somewhere, it was oem, then it should be on here as well. (if it was oem then it is most likely to be user cals.) 3. Is it possible to mix Device and User CALs on SBS 2003? Yes, you cn mix user and device cals together, as they both have different uses. the device cals are mainly used for hardware devices such as thin clients or pc or mobile devices, where you want to licence the device not the user. eg. user doesn't require an email address in exchange. if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.Reply by n/a from Malloy Enterprises on Tuesday, 13 November, 2012 - 22:06
Just noting (and also realising this is an old discussion): The current 5 CALs sounds like the 'included CALs' that came as part of the server purchase. The 'included CALs' are not of defined type (User vs Device) until used, at which time they must be recorded as the desired type. There is no way to 'query' the SBS03 as to what type the 'included CALs' are.
